International Bachelor Degree Course “Sozialwissenschaften: Migration und Integration / Social Sciences: Migration and Integration”

This degree course is unique in the whole of Germany. It offers a course of studies in the social sciences that is international, bilingual and fosters practical skills. 30 students are admitted each new academic year.

Social Sciences Based:  How do people live together socially? In so doing, what structures, phenomena and challenges can be seen? We discuss and analyse these in a variety of different ways using two basic approaches. These are principally sociological and via political theory, together with the social scientific analysis of the special area of migration and integration.

International: We bring international perspectives into subject areas wherever possible. A third language is also taught alongside the two teaching languages. Finally, the degree scheme involves a compulsory year abroad that can be completed either in the form of two semesters of study or comprises one term of study and one involving practical work.

Bilingual: The foundation course will be taught in German and English.

Fostering Practical Skills:
Acquiring practical experience plays an important role in all stages of the degree programme. Students, who wish to gain early practical experience in their future potential vocational field, will be given support in their first two years, running parallel to their studies. During the year abroad there is the option of doing one semester involving practical work whilst a project is planned for the final year, undertaken in conjunction with a professionally relevant organisation.

The course of studies lasts eight semesters – six at home and two abroad – and leads to the academic award of a Bachelor of Arts. It consists of full-time campus-based study, structured in a modular fashion and worth 30 points per semester according to ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), and comprises a total workload of 900 hours. 240 ECTS points are to be attained in the course of this programme.

The degree course begins each year in the winter term. There are no study fees to be paid. The admission requirement is at least a good knowledge of the German and English language together with the university entrance qualification. Study places are awarded according to a point score scale, on to which principally the grade achieved to qualify for university admission is entered as well as, for example, experience of living abroad and knowledge of foreign languages.
